Ambassador Fatimie attends UNHCR seminar on Afghan refugees at UNU

July 7, 2012: Ambassador Dr. Sayed M. Amin Fatimie, Mr. Sayed Ali Asghar Amiri and Mr. Yuki Takeda of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan attended the UN Refugee Agency’s (UNHCR’s) seminar " A Solutions Strategy for Afghan Refugees: Linking Humanitarian Action to Development Assistance" at the United Nations University. This event was one of the events in the series of parallel activities organized in conjunction with the Tokyo Conference on Afghanistan. The event was also supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Speakers at the event included H.E. Mr. Jamahir Anwari, Minister of Refugees and Repatriation; H.E. Mr. Shafiq Ahmad Qarizada, Deputy Minister for Policy, Ministry of Finance; Mr. Alexander Aleinikoff, Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees at UNHCR; Mr. Johan Cels, UNHCR Representative in Japan; H.E. Mr. Ryuji Yamane, Parliamentary Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan; Hon. Mr. Ichiro Aisawa, Secretary-General of the Parliamentary League for UNHCR; Mrs. Sadako Ogata, former UN High Commissioner for Refugees and former President of JICA; and Mr. Michael Keating of UNAMA.

In his speech, H.E. Minister Anwari spoke on the amazing progress that has been made in bringing more than 5 million refugees back to Afghanistan in the past several years, however He also emphasized both the need to work towards the voluntary return of more and the challenges of accommodating those who return.

Ambassador Fatimie took the opportunity to express to the participants and the organizers his greatest appreciation for their awareness-raising initiative, and for the positive role this is bound to have in bringing better lives to those who have returned to Afghanistan and those who are to come yet.
