SRSG says DDR can meet targets

New York, August 25, 2004 - In his briefing to the Security Council, Secretary-Generals Special Representative to Afghanistan Jean Arnault said that although the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) and the cantonment of heavy weapons processes were moving very slowly, the targets established at the Berlin Conference in relation to DDR could be met by the election date. To date, there are some 14,000 soldiers who have entered DDR. If 10,000 more enter DDR by the election that will bring the total close to 60 percent target of Afghan militias to be disarmed as established at the Berlin Conference. It now appears that the actual number of military forces is not the official 100,000 but closer to 50,000.
