Women's Day Celebrated

KABUL, March 6, 2010 (NTM-A): In a gathering on March 6th organized with the U.S. military to recognize Afghan women's accomplishments, Afghan women sat side-by-side with U.S. military women during an International Women s Day recognition at the Ministry of Defense (MOD), Kabul.

Lt. Col. Hazel Killebrew of the NATO Training Mission in Afghanistan in a speech showed his appreciation for Ministry of Interior (MOI) instructors for their work in literacy and computer education, and added, "You have my deepest respect and admiration; you the women in the ANA [Afghan National Army], you posses the famous Afghan strength and determination ... Our militaries and cultures are very different but we share a bond.

The event, which preceded International Women s Day's officially recognized date of March 8th, will be followed by larger celebrations on the actual day.

Earlier in the week, the Ministry of Interior held a women s day event in which Col. Col. Shaifiqa Quraishi, ANP chief of Gender and Human Rights Division was recognized as one of 10 worldwide recipients of the U.S. Secretary of State s International Women of Courage award.
