Afghan rugs to be showcased in China, Germany & US

Kabul, December 16, 2008 (Pajhwok Afghan News): Afghan rugs will be put on display at three international shows in China, Germany and the United States in next two months.

Export Promotion Agency Chief Executive Office (CEO) Suleman Fatemi told a press conference here on Sunday the exhibitions would be organised with financial support from the USAID and GTZ.

He added the first exhibition, to be held on December in Beijing 28-29, 25 private companies would showcase their carpets and dried fruit. For the second show, due in Horner city of Germany from January 12-15, 250 square metres of land had been leased for the display of the products.

Around 28 Afghan private companies have already transported their rug products to Germany for the trade fair with the support of the USAID and GTZ.

Fatemi said the third show would take place from January to 2 8 to February 2 in the US, where 14 private companies would exhibit display 70 kinds of rugs. The objective behind the exhibitions was to introduce Afghan rugs in the international market.

Various varieties of carpets, recognised around the world as a symbol of Afghan culture, tradition and civilisation, will go on display at three major international trade shows this winter.

The annual trade shows host carpet producers from all over the world. Afghanistan will be an active participant, presenting its elegant handmade carpets and building relationships with international exporters from all over the world.

Fatemi said participation in these trade shows would support and encourage the promotion of the Afghan carpet industry, and boost traders. The shows will help establish linkages to new markets and customers around the world.

Twenty-eight industry representatives will first visit Beijing. China is increasingly becoming an important business destination for Afghanistan, both for exporters and importers, remarked Bryan Rhodes, the Chief of Party for USAIDs Afghanistan Small and Medium Enterprise Development project.
