Reconstruction projects in Badghis linked to peace

Kabul, December 12, 2007 (Pajhwok Afghan News): Top political and military leaders of the northeastern Badghis province recently met local officials and elders of the Muqur district to discuss governance and development.

Governor Muhammad Ashraf Nasiri, Spanish Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) Commander Col. Honorio Cantero Lpez de Davalillo met with the local authorities and elders. The deputy governor and the police chief were also present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the governor emphasised the importance of security in the district in order for peace to exist and allow the PRT to work together with the Muqur population to begin reconstruction of the district.

Nasir voiced his vehement aversion to the cultivation of poppy while pledging stout support for the protection of pistachio forests, according to a press statement issued by the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

Prior to the meeting, a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a 10-kilometre stretch of the road from Qala-i-Naw to Muqur and the opening of a bridge took place. In his address, the governor thanked the Spanish PRT for its contribution to the improvement of infrastructure in the province.

The reconstruction projects were carried out by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI) in the framework of the Spanish PRT based in Qala-i-Naw. Support for governmental institutions and the development of the country, specifically in Badghis Province, is among the Spanish PRT priorities.
