Government to Rehabilitate the Pistachio Jungles

KABUL, December 27 (Quqnoos)

More than 2000 tons of pistachio were grown and exported annually 30 years ago. Since then, however, more than 60% of the pistachio jungles have been destroyed.

According to the figures by the ministry of agriculture, water and animal husbandry, out of the two million hectares of jungles in the country, 45,000 hectares of them were pistachio jungles, of which about 60% is now destroyed.

The ministry said it is planning to rehabilitate these jungles under the agricultural strategy plan.

Cutting of pistachio jungles, many years of war and the continuous droughts are said to be among the main reasons for the devastation of these jungles.

Pistachio jungles lie like a belt in the country’s north-eastern provinces of Badakhshan, Takhar, Baghlan, Samangan, Balkh, Sar-i-Pul, Faryab, Badghis and Herat.
